For my 30th birthday, I wanted a beautiful party that would be fun and camp. At the time I was busy writing my doctoral thesis on same-sex marriage in Cape Town, South Africa. I thought a wedding theme would be fun as it is something I was heavily focused on in my research and it is something that I love. I needed the theme to also have a frivolous side to it, I didn’t want people to think that I was really getting married (although they did think that anyway). So I thought about one of my favourite shows and voila “Sex and the City – the Wedding Reception” theme was born.
Immediately after I thought of the theme, the venue, and the invitations were easy. I decided on The Dining Room in Woodstock. I had been there before, and I had loved the space. It had the right decor and the food was excellent. I set up a meeting with the owner, and we discussed the menu and number of guests that space can accommodate. Karen and Miles were helpful and they understood the vision I had for the party. I wanted a wedding reception dinner, complete with all the trappings of a wedding. I wanted welcome champagne, speeches, beautifully plated tasty food, and a cake. I had everything I wanted. Thirty-eight of my closest friends and my mother celebrated with me the end of my twenties and the beginning of the 30’s.
The part was designed all in the name of fun. I party that is not serious, but takes having fun seriously. My friends responded well to the invitation because, like me, they also love a good themed party. We celebrated my birthday with references to weddings, and to Sex and the city. Some of my guests stuck with the theme even with birthday gifts. It was hilarious and absolutely fantastic. The energy of a themed party is elevated when people are serious about the theme. Here are some fantastic shots from the fabulous party night!
