Everyone in my life knows that I love bubbly. There are nights I go out and all I drink is bubbly. For many people, bubbly is something one drinks at a start of an event and then they move to “real” drinks. Not me. I will have bubbly if there is still bubbly to drink. I was extremely excited to hear about the Franschhoek Cap Classique and Champagne Festival.
It went to the festival in 2014 for the first time. My fabulous friend, Lungi and I stayed at the Protea Hotel by Marriott Franschhoek. This was the perfect location because it is a stone throw away from the iconic Huguenot Monument, where the festival is held.
The festival has a standard colour theme of black and white. It’s fun to see what people can do with these two colours, black and white. It is, of course, a challenge if you intend to make the festival an annual affair as you will have to come up with interesting different ways to wear black and white. The fashion challenge together with the copious amounts of bubbly you can indulge in sets this festival apart.
Local MCC production is really impressive. I am always impressed by the standard of production of local MCC. Of course, this shouldn’t be a surprise because South Africa makes some of the best wines in the world. As someone who has travelled in numerous places in the world, I can attest to the superior quality of South African wines.
The issue with us, we often under sell ourselves. Partly this under selling of ourselves has to do with narratives that only Europe has mastered wine and MCC production. Europeans themselves are drinking South African wine, so we should really embrace the fact that we’ve go it going on. ย The Franschhoek MCC festival is an affirmation and a celebration of local MCC production, that screams we’ve go it going on. I look forward to my next MCC festival.
