Thesen Island

Thesen Island

I spent the long weekend over Freedom Day and May Day in Thesen Island in Knysna. Thesen Island is like Wisteria Lane with canals. It is a gated community that does not feel gated because it has canals and you can access it via the lagoon with a boat. It is beautiful. It is clean. The houses on the island are well built. It is like a village in a children’s fairy tale book. The whole island has canals and beautifully paved and painted streets. It feels unreal. It’s a world unto itself. It feels like it a holiday village, and clearly while we were there most of the houses were vacant. The houses on the canals had their docking space. It’s a place that will pressure you into getting a boat. It was fascinating to be in the space, and imagine how other people live. Granted, those “other” people are only 1% of the population. Still, it was interesting to imagine how it would feel to be part of that world. The neatness of the island I could get used. It was so clean, and so organised, I had moments where I wished our whole country were like that, or at least tried to be like that, at least neatness part. Being on the island with friends was special. We slept in, we had a braai every night, we spent time in the hot tub, and we went cruising on the boat in the canals and in the lagoon. Every time we would go cruising in the canals with the boat, I would imagine which house was positioned the best. The north facing houses were the best because they had sun for most of the day, and a glorious sunset. The house that was my favourite was north facing with a Spanish flag on it. I imagined Spanish foreigners must own it. I want to try and take my mother to Thesen Island. I know she would get a kick out of it. Below are pictures from the fabulous weekend away.
