On the way back from the May Day long weekend away, Pierre and I stopped at the Springfield Wine Estate. We were driving back from Knsyna where we had spent the weekend with friends. It was a fantastic weekend, and I will post about the weekend way another time. Right now I want to talk about our excursion to Springfield winery. Springfield is famous for their distinct “Life From Stone” Sauvignon Blanc and the “Wild Yeast” Chardonnay. When I go out and I am having a special occasion, and I am willing to splurge a little bit, these two wines are always a perfect choice. I am not a sommelier, but I love wine, I love the wine country, and I love the art of wine tasting. So whenever an opportunity presents itself to go wine tasting, one should take it. Going to Springfield was such an opportunity. One doesn’t travel to Robertson often, so driving past there from somewhere else presents a great opportunity to go wine tasting. Of course, with wine tasting, the tasting is but only half the experience. Wine tasting is also about the relaxation, the slowing down and enjoying the countryside, it is about marvelling at the craftsmanship of winemakers in South Africa. Wine tasting is part of the Cape Town lifestyle. We are lucky to live in this part of the world where we have access to some of the world’s best wines. I find Springfield unpretentious and welcoming. The outside tables give you a great view of the pond with live fish and a view of the mountains in the distance. Autumn weather is kicking in so the trees and the vineyard were in different shades of orange and yellow. So like us, if you happened to be driving by Robertson, pop in at Springfield, although, in all honestly, Springfield is worth a trip out to Robertson.
